Marcus Nygren is a music teacher in Stockholm, Sweden. He first visited Uganda in December 2008, where he saw the need for a Music School to help develop the youths of the country. Music is in the hearts of many Ugandans. Everywhere you go, there are people playing radios loudly for others to enjoy. Marcus started the programme training local volunteers in the guitar and piano/keyboard. These volunteers would go on to become teachers in the Music School.
The curriculum consists of acoustic guitar, bass guitar, piano/keyboard and voice training. The Music School has teamed up with a local Mini Recording Studio where young people record their music for marketing purposes. The studio has produced many local artists and some of their songs are played on the National Radio. Although a lot of money is invested in buying musical instruments, teaching materials, and so on, the Music School is still a non-profit-making venture.
We have been blessed by visits from music teachers, like Marcus, from Sweden and other parts of the world, who have imparted knowledge to the students in the Music School. But there is still a tremendous need for volunteers with the willingness and skills to teach music e.g. instruments, studio/recording, performing arts, voice training, and more.
